There is so much talk around aging and aging out, as though growing older is an automatic ticket to opt out of a beautiful life that's still blooming. My grandmother did not fear it. My mother did not apologize for it. I am not starting now.
My Lineage
I don't panic when I see a line on my face or feel a shift in my body. I wasn't raised to fear aging. I inherited a different blueprint entirely, from a bloodline of women who showed love for their bodies, regardless of size or sagginess.
My maternal grandmother was a dark-complexioned Jamaican woman of unshakeable confidence. Whether beautifully dressed for an occasion or sitting behind her basket at the market, she moved with absolute poise and authority. She wasn't trying to erase her years. She was busy living her life with pride.
Then there was my mother. I watched her move through the house completely unbothered by her body's changes, weight fluctuations, the evidence of a life fully lived. After her bath, she lotioned her body in front of us with such tender care and dignity. In hindsight, that wasn't vanity. It was respect. She treated her body lovingly through every season, including breast cancer.
I inherited their confidence. A legacy of women who did not apologize for existing in changing bodies, who taught me that a body in transition deserves love and care, not criticism.
Body Trust vs. Body Fear
A headache does not automatically mean you're aging. A softer midsection is not a moral failure. Our bodies constantly communicate with us, and yes, we should listen. But there's a difference between paying attention and living in a constant state of alarm.
When you stop fighting the physical evidence that you have lived, you swap judgment for curiosity, fear for wisdom, resistance for acceptance.
We are not fading out. We are aging IN.
Aging In
I do not panic when my body changes or gives an alarm. I pay attention. I ask questions. I adjust. I care for it. Because this body has carried me through joy, grief, motherhood, love, loss, and brand-new beginnings. It has earned my curiosity, not my criticism.
My grandmother did not apologize for her years. My mother lotioned every version of her body with the same tenderness. That is the blueprint I hold dearly, and it is the one I choose every single day.
I am not chasing a version of myself that no longer exists, but nurturing all that I have evolved and become.
That, my dearest ones, is not anti-aging.
That is aging in. Fully, without permission, in every single season.
My invitation to you today is simple: look at the version of you right now, in this moment. What has your body been through with you that deserves your curiosity instead of your criticism? Drop me a comment and tell me.
Do me a favor please and share this reflection with a woman who needs the reminder that her body has never once been the enemy.
With love and radiant light...until next time...
